Lyra is a child surrounded by adults, not a teenager surrounded by teens. The intermediate step of teen lit didn't exist yet, but compared to what would be established there these books are something of an ill fit. Nor do they fit well with adults being you know centered around children. One could be young and read them, I actually read the first book in elementary school, but they are also not as kid friendly as say Animorphs and if I hadn't already moved on to (nominally) adult novels before Golden Compass I probably would have passed it by. I look back on these now and I have to wonder what exactly the target demographic for them is supposed to be. We can also talk about what the books themselves present. Yet they actually just predate the YA/teen-lit explosion brought about by Harry Potter. Much less a genre launching standard like LOTR.

When the movie came out the series was twelve years old so not a timeless classic. I would start with a weaker presence for the source material. That's why it was very difficult for people who didn't know the books to follow the plot resulting in the general audience not liking it either. The movie also cut all the stuff around religion to clearly swing more for the Harry Potter crowd.īut unlike the Harry Potter movies, the pacing was really bad in this movie - a direct result of the books being much much longer than the early Harry Potter books while also being a lot more dense in terms of content. He is on for such a short section of the movie. They instead chose to end the movie with the cool bear fight but if you want to make the movie about the rise of Iorek, give him more time on screen. The finale btw was cut from the movie entirely to be used in the sequel. Lyra's journey is a coming of age story not simply because of the horrors that she sees in the adult world but also how the world is not as simple as she initially perceived it to be which comes to haunt her in the brutal finale. That may have prevented the other two novels from being adapted to the screen, leaving the cinematic trilogy incomplete.īut even though the film wasn't received with unanimous praise, that might be the very reason to give it another chance.Fans of the books don't like it because it stripped the story off most of the stuff that made it interesting and unique.
